We’re very pleased to be bringing a taste of Elm City PopFest to Hartford this year. This will be our first-ever Hartford show, but hopefully not the last. We’ll be at the Charter Oak Cultural Center on Aug. 13 with three great bands.
THE GURU (Watertown, Conn.)
The Guru are a four-piece indie-rock band that have been getting a lot of buzz lately — all of it deserved. The band just released its first full-length album, “Native Sun,” to rave reviews. They’re also fresh from an appearance at this year’s B.O.M.B. Fest. The band has a sound that resemblesbands such as 80′s underground heroes The Minutemen as well as a distinct Modest Mouse vibe with a definite funk influence.
For four guys aged seventeen to eighteen to produce a band like The Guru, it’s hard not to wonder if they are accomplishing too much too soon. I mean, guys, really? Aren’t we all supposed to start a band like Old Skull in our parents’ basements first? … I guess it’s safe to go further and say that The Guru are in a general way a little like major-label Modest Mouse, but The Guru have a clearer, happier creative pool to pull from, that hopefully they won’t someday evaporate with Brock-like drug-fueled antics. … The Guru’s full length Native Sun is out on Sex Cave Records, eight tightly efficient summer songs, with chanty choruses, crisp guitars, and ass kicking energy. — CT Indie
TEENS ACROSS THE NORTH (Northampton, Mass.)
Teens Across the North is a NoHo supergroup of sorts. Featuring Jason Bourgeois, Ken Maiuri, Stephen Gallo and Blyth B. They play “small apartment pop” that’s low on volume and high on melodic dazzle, with harmonies, spirited playing and a creative instrumental palette (toy piano, ukulele, glockenspiel, electric piano, guitars, bass and homestyle percussion).
GIRLS IN THE BOY SCOUTS (Hartford, Conn.)
Girls in the Boy Scouts is indiepop from Hartford. With boy/girl vocals, GitBS shifts between gentle pop hooks and shoegazey, almost post punk, tunes. The band features Meghan Quinn, Andy Jackson, Matt Sargent, Kevin Lamkins and Dave Rozza.
